My car has P0400 exhaust gas recirculation flow malfunction. can anyone throw light here?

My car is a mazda protege. Is it safe to drive with that malfunction. I live in Ithaca, NY so what would be the estimated cost of repair. Thank you for your answers.|||an egr code doesn't necessarily mean u need a new egr valve.......it could have plugged passage ways that carry the vacuum ....so the egr valve cant work..the ecm cannot get the proper inputs from the egr.... so it turns on the ses light....this may not be the case..... u may need a egr valve...but this plugged vacuum passage way ..could be the issue...there are other reasons why the light came on with this code....but this is one of the main ones|||P0400 Exhaust Gas Recirculation Flow Malfunction

Rather generic error code, could be any one of several things, EGR valve, any one of several hoses split or disconnected. Cost of repair would depend on what they find wrong.|||It probably needs an EGR vavle which means exhaust gas recirculation.|||better get your silencer serviced / changed...|||get yourself a egr valve and put it on.
