What does the EGR (Exhaust Gas Recirculation valve) do?

i know that EGR solenoids are used to switch engine vacuum on and off at the right time. but vacuum to what? would it affect my transmission? would it make my motor rev up go in gear, but when i accelerate slip out of gear?|||they are supposed to send unburned gas fumes back into the cylinder to be remixed and burned. i do not think it will cause your problems.|||Slip into gear? from park? Sounds like a linkage problem there.

As for reving high? could be many things. Check your PCV (positive crank vent) Make sure it rattles like it's loose when you shake it, and it wouldn't hurt to clean it out with carb cleaner while your at it. Sounds like you have a vacuum leak somewhere, which will make it rev high. EGR does exactly that, recirculates exhaust gas back to the intake to reduce the temp and lower emissions. A bad EGR valve will cause rough idle, stalling, and low power if stuck. So i think your looking for a vacuum leak.|||EGR exists solely to control production of nitrous oxides (NOx). Under the command ot the ECU, the EGR valve opens a variable amount to dilute the intake fuel/sir mixture with relatively inert gas from the exhaust. If the EGR fails to open the engine will run okay but fail emission tests; if it fails to close the idle suffers badly enough the engine may stall.

The EGR won't cause your symptoms.
